Hello, Pro. Charles W. Hayford. I am a Chinese student majoring in modern China history. It is very interesting to find you naming your blog "frog in a well", because my nickname in douban.com is "hurry to dug a well when i fell thirty"(临渴掘井). I think there is some kind of similar between two names.

And then here is why I come here. Recently, I am undertaking an essay about Missions in China, especially in Shantung province during 1877-1878，in which time there was an serious famine hitting north China. I want to make a survey about how these missions in Shantung help the local people. Now, I am collecting books and articles on this issue. And on the Internet, I found a book list made by you, "American China Missions: An Introductory Bibliography". I think you could help me. I have just begun to get touch with foreign scholar works on this issue, and would you please introduce me some books on this issue? I have almost finished the collection on Chinese-language works. And I need some English or other-language books and articles on it, especially some kinds of conclusion. I know this question seem a little unreasonable. But I really have great interest in this issue.
And English is not my mother tongue. If I am with some bad manners of writing and phraseology, please forgive me.
Thanks a lot!

Thanks, Alan, and congratulations on your (well deserved) award.

But I wouldn't share any stories on my students. The reason in partly on the high principle that there is an implied confidentiality comparable to lawyer-client privilege, but also because they could come back with even worse stories on me!

Dear Professor Hayford,

Glad to have you aboard, and I hope that you have a goot time here. I'm sure that if you ever find yourself at a loss for things to comment about you can always dig up some stories about silly things your students (like myself) have said at various points
