Nice to see a picture of one. I've had them described to me by Chinese archaeologists but I never heard the term Luoyang shovel before. When I was in China the last time a couple of months ago we saw them used in a survey as we visited the excavation site of the ancient city of Luoyang from the eastern Han dynasty. We only saw them from a distance but they had elongated them with bamboo sticks. You can see it on a picture on my blog.

Hessler describes them in Oracle Bones, which I just read, so I actually know what you're talking about.... Nice to actually see one, thanks!
