What do you think of Rumer Godden’s books: Little Plum (http://www.amazon.com/dp/0670433233 ) and Miss Happiness and Miss Flower (http://www.amazon.com/Miss-Happiness-Flower-Rumer-Godden/dp/0333026039/ref=la_B000APBPP4_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1370487948&sr=1-5 )?
Not really historical fiction, though not about today, either. (Published in 1963 and 1961, respectively.)
Too bad about the Magic Tree House books, though. Kids love them, so really a missed opportunity.
