Update on Masuda Sensei

A brief update on the case of Masuda Miyako, the Tokyo middle school teacher who was suspended for having her pupils write a letter of apology addressed to South Korean president, Roh Moo-hyun. According to the Hangyoreh newspaper yesterday it seems that she has now been sacked. The grounds appear to be that she has not reconsidered her actions and is ‘unfit’ to be employed as a civil servant, although she has not lost her teacher’s licence.

She responded: “Japan is said to be a democratic country, but in fact, although it doesn’t employ blatant violence, it is nevertheless no different to a totalitarian state.” She also says that she will continue to fight her dismissal.

  1. Hello. Some of you may have already seen these news… but for those who have not, here
are some Korean news on Masuda Sensei broadcasted on April 5th.

    KBS http://news.kbs.co.kr/article/news9/200604/20060405/860716.html
    SBS http://news.sbs.co.kr/international/international_NewsDetail.jhtml?news_id=N1000095420

Today I went to a demonstration held infront of the Japanese parliament and also to a
meeting held at the Japan Federation of Bar Associations to oppose the
    new “conspiracy bill”(Kyobozai). (more→ http://mdn.mainichi-msn.co.jp/education/wordwatch/news/20060404p2g00m0fp019000c.html)
Thre I received a leaflet on Masuda Sensei, supporters of Masuda sensei are
organizing meetings and collecting signatures. On the leaflet there were some messages
from her previous students. I will translate a part of it into English.

Why on earth is Masuda Sensei sacked?! This is ridiculous! Why does Masuda sensei
have to be treated like this just because OOO’s (stuent’s name) father complained?
Tokyo board of education is crazy! What is Ishihara Shintaro doing?
What is wrong with Sensei’s teaching? She was just trying to teach us the right thing…

    to be continued…

  2. Thanks for that. Please do continue, I’d be fascinated to hear more about the campaign and the actual details of the case.

  3. If any other people like ‘Wonder’ are planning to contribute here I’d like to point out to them that this site is intended to be a place for reasoned and informed debate not assertions without evidence or argument to back them up. There is no shortage of places to go on the internet for flame wars and pointless abuse. Differences of opinion are welcomed but please at least try to make an argument and refrain from nonsense like this.
